Featured Designer: K8 is great!

KATE GAUGHRAN is a very talented freelance graphic designer currently living and working in London. She studied design at Dun Laoghaire in Dublin and then went on to do a masters in typography at the London College of Printing. She now works as a freelance designer, and has been freelancing at EMI Records with their in-house design team The Red Room, for the past two and half years. At EMI she designs album sleeves mostly. Kate’s interests lie in hand-crafted typography and has a big passion for photography which she dabbles in on the side but has great plans to do a lot more of.

Above is an example of some of her work (click on the image for a larger view). This is a CD packaging design she did for Derek Martin who’s an American soul singer and the brief was to design the packaging for some of his recordings from the 1960s when he was with Roulette Recordings. The design needed to reflect the musical genre and also needed to be very much of that era in feel. She was inspired by old northern soul and funk sleeves from that time and wanted to do something quite typographical in style as she had very little to work with in terms of available photographs of the artist. The result is quite retro looking but has a contemporary feel which gives it a nice balance.
